Rick.lang wrote:Still quite curious about the architecture and performance of the Apple Silicon Mac Pro 2022. ![]() The Studio Ultra replaces the USB ports with two more Thunderbolt 4 ports. * The main differences between the Mac Studio/Max and the 16" MacBook/Max, apart from portability, are price (the Studio is significantly cheaper if one already owns a monitor) and ports (the Studio has an additional Thunderbolt 4 port, for a total of four, and adds two USB 3.1 Gen. Meanwhile, the Max Studio/Max has similar performance to the 16" MacBook Pro/Max, which uses the same chip and about which there have been no such assertions during the five months that it's been on the market.*Īll I know is that I used a Mac Studio Max for two weeks and was happy with the performance and quiet operation, which is why I'm now having one built to order. We're two weeks from launch, and on MacRumors there are already three threads/42 pages of debate about noise Of course, this wouldn't please another group that emerges every time that Apple introduces a new computer, the gang that complains for page after page about fan noise. MacRumors experts are asserting that the Mac Studio runs too cool, is being limited and that Apple should crank up the firmware for more performance. In 2018, when Apple launched the new Mac mini, MacRumors experts asserted for page after page that Apple hardware engineers didn't know what they were doing, that the CPU ran far too hot and that it would fail after a short life. Rick.lang wrote:I hope by the time you receive your upgraded Mac Studio, the software will enable driving the hardware without any limiters holding back your throughput.ĭon't believe everything that you read on MacRumors, especially when it's based on claims by a single YouTube channel that boasts that it's pumping out six videos a week. * I've increased the memory mainly for reasons having to do with Logic and the short-term memory demands of virtual instrument libraries. Apple estimates that it will deliver my new computer at the end of June I have plenty of time to decide whether to pursue the option, because I'm now in a lineup. Having made this decision, the option discussed in the following thread may go by the wayside: Thunderbolt 4 and PCIe/M.2 External Storage. I plan to use the computer in both the US and Canada, and the increase in drive capacity will also make travelling with it a bit easier. On the latter, I increased capacity from the base 512GB to 2TB because I decided that I'd like to cut the umbilical cord to external drives, except for backup, which 2TB will do for me. I decided to upgrade the number of graphics cores (24 to 32), memory (32GB to 64GB)* and drive capacity. What I took from this is that drive capacity has no significant impact on read speed, at least up to 2TB, but does on write speed, not that there's anything wrong with any of these write speeds: I think that they're a reasonable approximation. The speeds below are from Blackmagic's Disk Speed Test at a stress of 5GB. I decided to upgrade my base Mac Studio/Max and obtained some read/write speeds for other Mac Studios as part of making my decision on specs. ![]()
